Club Programs

Regular Play

Monday through Thursday evenings there is regular club play. Members sign up to curl on whichever evenings they choose. There are four separate schedules each curling season, which results in a team being together for five or six weeks. Because this play is so popular, there are two draws each night, beginning at 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM. The lounge and bar/canteen is open for fellowship all evening.Game results are recorded, and the winners of each schedule play off against each other and trophies/prizes are awarded to outstanding teams during the closing banquet in April.

Junior Program

(By Carl Lovett ...)

Glooscap Junior Curling has over 60 members actively participating in the program. The ages run from 7 to 16 years. Junior age eligibility is up to and including 19 years. Three age groups compete at the Provincial level: under 14, under 17, and under 20.

The Glooscap Junior Program takes place each Tuesday through Friday, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The Program is broken into two divisions, Tuesday for beginners/novices; and Wednesdays and Fridays for more experienced juniors. The two Divisions combine three or four times during the year for Bonspiels and special events. Teams that participate in Bonspiels and Provincial Competitions, are coached and practiced on weekends, using available ice time. Thursdays are utilized by local schools, as requested.

Some schools like Kentville Elementary, Aldershot and Evangeline Middle School come in for occasional curling, usually associated with the physical education program or a winter carnival. We appreciate the volunteer effort made by Glooscap curlers, without whom the junior program could not exist.

Experience is not necessary. There are qualified instructors present at all times. Instruction is on going through the season. There is no cost for equipment as brooms, sliders, etc. are available at the club. The cost of the program is $50 for the season (Nov. to Mar.). Curling is a wonderful game for all ages. Girls and boys can compete together, and smaller children can compete with bigger children. Size and weight are not a factor, skill and technique are major factors. Drop by Glooscap for a visit and check out the GREAT GAME OF CURLING.

Senior Curling

The senior program is a vibrant part of the Glooscap Club, with about 70 men and 20 ladies. The senior men meet to curl, play cards and swap lies on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Tuesday and Thursday mornings were for the ladies, but they have invited the men to join them. (Ladies not restricted to seniors)

Visitations to/from other clubs in the province occur frequently, when the curling is followed by a harty lunch and almost unbelievable stories provided by the host club.

The seniors are an integral part of every aspect of Glooscap, and also do much of the maintenance and housework of the facilities, and do much of the coaching of juniors during the afternoons and weekends.

Sunday League

The Sunday League is largely designed to attract groups of friends or colleagues who want to curl together as a team for the whole year.

We have teams who are experienced curlers and also teams who are curling for the first or second time and teams who are trying out new positions for the first time just to gain experience.

For people who only want to curl one night this is a viable option. Fees are $400 + tax for a team entry (maximum 6 members) or $100 + tax if the team members pay individually. Many of the Sunday Night curlers are full members of the club and thus their fee is covered under the General Membership Fee.

There is a Sunday Night Overall Winner Plaque and also a "Choked Herring Trophy" for the last place team. A point system is associated with each night of curling and this eliminates ties and having to have playoffs. The season usually ends with a fun night, with pot luck munchies and a trophy for the overall winner of this evening. All Trophies are presented at this time.
